Intro

Welcome to my blog,

I post a lot of random things, and my interests change a lot, but I never completely abandon them so there’s always a chance they’ll crop up again.

I don’t really tag anything, I’ve attempted to on occasions but it never sticks, so if you’re browsing just by tag on my archive page you’ll miss stuff.

No hard feelings if you ever want to unfollow, even if we’re mutuals, there can be tons of reasons to unfollow somebody, and just not liking what I post anymore, or thinking I post too much stuff are perfectly valid reasons to unfollow.

I’ve got a Doctor Who sideblog : https://whthvbutterflieseverdonetoyou.tumblr.com/

So this is where most of my DW stuff ends up.

If there is a season on I’ll use the tag : dw spoilers, for up to a week after the day the episode has aired, after that it’s fair game.

Also in case, the rainbow flag icon wasn’t enough of a hint, I’m queer, so if this is a problem for you just press the back button of your browser.

it’s funny to me how the logic behind tumblr’s new layout changes are to coddle potential new users, to make them feel more comfortable by giving them a layout that’s more familiar to navigate

…..by making the CURRENT users feel LESS comfortable by giving them a layout that’s LESS familiar to navigate.

they’re prioritizing a hypothetical scenario over their established, existing userbase, some of which (like me) who have been here for 10+ years

Do you write music with the view of being politically active and delivering a message or does it just happen and the rest follows?

#this is a perspective I’ve only seen from people who truly think broadly and sympathetically about life#like he’s literally right I’m sorry and people who aren’t white or cis or straight learn so so SO early that your existence is political#not inherently but because white cishet men have crafted society in a way it’s impossible for it not to be#and ignoring that isn’t going to make you ascend above it god I’m so tired of having to explain that to people#I’m tired of people’s experiences in both places of privilege and place of oppression being used to scapegoat what we all can see#like look at his example!#‘going out for a dance on a Saturday night’ means something different if you’re poor if you’re gay if you’re a racial minority#’walking into a shop’ who owns it how often do you go is it a big box store or a small owned business is it walkable#there’s pOLitiCs in all of that! in ever aspect of your life!#ESPECIALLY if you take your life experiences and turn them into art of any form (via @twentyfour-mp3)

Friendly reminder that Hozier’s first music video, in 2013, involved him literally taking his life savings and using it to make a protest video about anti-gay actions in Chechnya. This was not a popular position at the time, to the point that damn near every interviewer asked “so, are you gay?” because they literally could not figure out why he cared so much.

Incidentally, after the first few times of saying “no, I’m straight but it’s important,” he started saying “you can think that if you want.” ALSO not a popular position at the time. Adam Lambert’s entire career had been derailed only four years before because he dared to be openly gay and sexual about it.

He literally came out swinging like Muhammad Ali and has not stopped. And he finds it odd that people find it odd! Like he was asked if he was aware of his “lesbian cult following” and seemed genuinely puzzled why he has a lesbian cult following (and, later, just a massive queer following in general) and it’s like. Honey. You loved us first. You loved us more and harder than most people were willing to. When it was unpopular to even whisper about how maybe queer people shouldn’t be seen as inhuman actually, you grabbed a megaphone and screamed. You risked not just losing a career, but never having one at all, to stand by us. You loved us. We’re just loving you back.

Hey, I saw you're talking to users about this dash change, and thanks for that. I am admittedly part of the big no reaction going on, and for me, part of the problem is that as an autistic user of this site having this change forced on me suddenly, while I was in the middle of using it, actually sent me into a panic because I could not process what had happened. So I've got two questions that you may or may not be able to answer.

First, the saving grace of the new text editor was making it so I could opt in at first and it wasn't forced. I could use it at my pace and adjust to it, why not do something like that with this? Or even give a better warning for it than 1 tiny little paragraph on a blog that not everyone follows?

Second, if I have suggestions that would make this layout more comfortable for me to use where can I send them and is it even worth it?

cyle:

hey, i’m really really sorry that we elicited that reaction.

it’s bad how we roll out changes like this, and how every platform rolls out changes in an experiment: suddenly and without warning. the nature of A/B testing is to introduce shock, in a way, and see what happens. that’s so, so, so bad for tumblr, because our audience does skew towards people who won’t respond well to that shock. we really pride ourselves in being a home for people who don’t want that from other platforms, and in situations like this, we’re totally failing you.

the unfortunate counter-point, though, is that providing opt-in choice creates selection bias when we want to understand how a change would truly (statistically) change behavior across hundreds of thousands or millions of people. that’s a huge, bad, glaring problem with how the internet operates at scale today: we try to solve for the many instead of the few, in the name of growth or profit. nobody is comfortable with that fact.

as for suggestions, please please send them to Support as feedback. we want your feedback, and it’s worth it. we read all of it.

there’s probably somebody out there who is working in statistics who can solve the problem of selection bias and experimenting at scale… i can’t wait for that day to come. it’ll make the world better for all of us.

Reminder that this is an experiment as per their official announcement (screenshot below).

Since this is an experiment, give your feedback to staff!

And remember to be specific on how this new navigation layout they are experimenting with is not working for you; hating it is one thing, but usability on different devices with different screen orientations, operating system, etc., would be much more impactful and meaningful.

we should talk more about how every decision you make as an adult leaves you with the same sensation you got at a friend’s house the morning after a sleepover when you’re the first to wake up. It’s dreadful and a homesickness and loneliness and you want your cups and you want your comforter and it’s just you on your own trying to get through.

W.I.T.C.H. The heart of friendship is a new manga-style graphic novel, presented as the reboot of the famous original comic series. In this modern day adaptation, the group of friends Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin battle a mysterious threat from another world. The girls will discover that only together can they save the day, because magic is most powerful when shared. 20 years later, here is the new version of the Witches, which remakes a story based on the original comic series, but in the form of the graphic novel. This is a completely new story, a modern adaptation for today’s female readers. The protagonists reflect the expectations of young contemporary readers: they are today’s girls who live their daily lives in a modern world in step with our times. Daily life, fashion, technology and society are inspired by reality, allowing for greater empathy between readers and protagonists. A fantastic “reboot” that will allow young readers to discover and fall in love with this new magical version and will bring back the history fans to the memory of their magic.

  • The image comes from a facebook post that mentions this was printed in an italian magazine called “Anteprima”.
  • The magazine is actually posted online officially here. The problem is that the PDF version cuts out at page 140 and this image is apparently printed in page 163 in a section dedicated to upcoming releases, which is missing in the online version. (it seems from what i can understand that it works more as a checklist so it makes sense it cut out that part)

so if you are italian please, if you can and have access to the print version of Anteprima, can you confirm or deny this?

I mean the book is already in presale in several european Amazon pages published by “Disney Libri” so i doubt it’s fake but i don’t know if this is how the whole thing is gonna work out in the end. see:

people love to ignore that adhd is a spectrum with different levels of support needs and it effects every person differently.

some people with adhd can adapt to neurotypical society better than others, can function without meds or don’t need them every day. some adhders are able to have successful careers and some aren’t and they can’t even finish their education.

most people’s preconceived notions of adhd are almost entirely based on low support needs adhders so please remember about people with adhd who have higher support needs - our experiences are also important.

This is a single tree in Brazil… It’s the world’s largest cashew tree and covers an area of about 8,000 square meters/about 2 acres.

The tree’s record size is believed to be the result of two different genetic mutations. One, the branches grow sideways instead of upwards, eventually being weighted down and touching the ground. Second, instead of just growing along the earth as expected, when a branch touches the soil it sets down roots. Thus the tree spreads like a forest with multiple trunks growing over the two acres.

It appears to me a lot of people’s impression of Sherlock Holmes’ drug use out of context is “he’s running around solving murders while coked out of his mind” which is really funny BUT!

As someone who reads acd canon & has the autistic urge to correct people about my interests, I’d like to let it be known that he actually primarily uses drugs between cases, because he gets painfully bored with nothing to do, stating “my mind rebels at stagnation.” This is because he has adhd but the diagnosis hadn’t been invented yet. Anyway

This can still be funny because it means the rest of the time he’s acting like that while completely sober. He’s just quirky. He IS a cokehead but it actually calms him down. Because he needs adderall

You may hear “Sherlock Holmes does cocaine” and think “oh, that explains why he’s so fucking weird” but you would have it backwards. He does cocaine because he’s already just Like That. He does this specifically when he’s understimulated. They didn’t have adhd meds in victorian london he’s taking whatever stimulants are available. And That’s why he’s coked out of his mind. But Not while currently working on a case, because that keeps him busy

*note: I have adhd I know how it is

a friend of mine recently told me about a guy he knows who got really into cocaine because “it calmed him down”. literally coke was his chill-out drug.

we are working on getting him an adhd diagnosis.

Things Sherlock Holmes is/does:

  • blunt and dismissive of people/things that don’t interest him (ie. the earth going around the sun)
  • is a “calendar of crime”, his special interest
  • collects the Victorian equivalent of wikipedia-rabbit-holes of information, none of which seems to be connected or useful to Watson
  • needs stimulants to quiet his brain down when he’s bored
  • outside-the-box observational skills that he sees as obvious but that Watson and everyone else finds boggling
  • will talk excitedly about things that interest him whether the listener wants to hear or not
  • has depressive episodes where he will be quiet and withdrawn for days at a time

Our man’s definitely one of the ADHD club :D

Anyway, found a metaphor.

“You are so lucky you get to stay home and not work.”

Change to:

“You are so lucky you get to eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You are so lucky you are not allowed to eat anything else.”

Many people like ice cream. Many people know that they will get sick if they only eat ice cream. Maybe this gets through?

I like this comparison because it captures the torturous monotony and the bleakness of being physically disabled and unemployable/unable to return to school/etc. it does fucking suck actually

fandomsandfeminism:

Hey, if you’re wanting to make some changes to how you eat, remember- it’s much easier, healthier, and more sustainable to ADD foods that make you feel good than it is to REMOVE foods.

If you feel like you don’t drink enough non-sugary fluids, it makes more sense to try drinking more tea and sparkling water than it does to just avoid soda. You gotta add in the good (and remember, that the only value food has is how it makes YOU feel. Food is morally nuetral and should be enjoyed.)

Try:

  • Adding a handful of easy produce to lunch and dinner- baby carrots or cherry tomatoes, something 0 prep. And yes, you are allowed to dip it in dressing! (The fats can make it easier for your body to absorb the vitamins in the veggies)
  • Adding a cheese stick or yogurt to breakfast. The protein is good and can help you wake up faster.
  • Adding some roasted nuts to your afternoon snack. (ADD, not replace.) That variety and little protein boost will do you good!
  • Have a glass of tea, sparkling water, or juice each time you have food. Let’s be honest- you aren’t hydrated enough. Go buy yourself some Kool Aide mix if that’ll make you drink more water! Really!
  • If you struggle with binge eating sugary foods and it makes you feel yuck when the sugar crash comes- eat 1 or 2 pieces of chocolate with lunch and dinner. Every day. Really. Make it not a big deal. Make it not special. Make it something you can expect, instead of crave. Let yourself enjoy it without guilt.

Remember- food is a gift. It should bring you joy, not stress. Trust your body. Enjoy the cookie. Drink something tasty.
